The 7 types of digital marketing: SEO, PPC, social media, content, email and WhatsApp, video and YouTube, influencer and affiliate

The seven types of digital marketing are search engine optimisation (SEO), pay-per-click advertising (PPC), social media marketing, content marketing, email and WhatsApp marketing, video and YouTube marketing, and influencer and affiliate marketing. Each one reaches customers at a different moment, costs a different amount, and takes a different amount of time to produce results — which is why the useful question is not "what are the seven types?" but "which two or three does my business actually need?"

I have run all seven for clients over eight years, from Dwarka dental clinics to Chhattisgarh steel dealers, and I have watched most businesses get the choice wrong in the same way: they pick the type a friend recommended, or the one an agency happened to be selling, rather than the one that matches how their customers buy. This guide fixes that. For each type you will get what it is in plain language, how it actually works in India, what it costs (using our real published prices, not vague ranges), how long it takes, who it suits, and the mistake that wastes the most money. Then a chooser by business type and budget, and a way to measure each one.

Costs are our real starting prices as of 2026 — see every plan on the pricing page — and the time-to-results figures are what we typically see in client work; your market and starting point move them.

1. Search engine optimisation (SEO)

SEO is the work of making your website and Google Business Profile show up when people search for what you sell — "dentist near me", "TMT bar dealer Raipur", "best IELTS institute in Chandigarh". You do not pay Google for the click; you earn the position by being the most relevant, credible and technically sound result.

In practice it has four moving parts: technical health (speed, mobile experience, indexing), on-page content that matches real searches, your Google Business Profile for map-pack results, and the trust signals — reviews, citations, links — that decide close contests. For local businesses in India, the map pack is the prize: the three businesses shown on the map get the calls.

Cost and time. Our SEO plans start at ₹18,000 per month. Map-pack movement typically shows in 60–90 days; competitive first-page rankings take three to six months, longer in brutal niches like immigration or real estate. SEO is slow to start and cheap to keep — the traffic keeps coming after the work is paid for, which no ad can claim.

Best for. Any business whose customers search before they buy — which today is almost every business. It is the single highest-return type over a two-year horizon.

The expensive mistake. Judging it at day 30 and switching it off. SEO compounds; the businesses that win are the ones still doing it in month nine.

2. Pay-per-click advertising (PPC)

PPC is paid advertising where you pay only when someone clicks — primarily Google Ads on search results, and Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram. Google catches people who are already searching; Meta creates demand by putting your offer in front of people who match your customer profile.

The economics vary wildly by niche. A click on "packers and movers in Dwarka" might cost ₹30; a click on "study visa consultant Chandigarh" can cost several hundred rupees; the same service in Raipur often costs a fraction of the Delhi price. That is why PPC rewards management: weekly search-term pruning, tight targeting and tracked conversions are the difference between a profitable account and an expensive one.

Cost and time. Our management starts at ₹20,000 per month; your ad budget goes directly to Google or Meta. Campaigns are live within days and produce enquiries in the first week; give them a month to calibrate. Sensible starting ad budgets in India run from ₹15,000 a month for local services to ₹50,000 and up for high-value or competitive categories.

Best for. Businesses that need enquiries this month, services where one customer is worth thousands, launches, and seasonal pushes like admissions or festive sales.

The expensive mistake. Boosting posts and calling it advertising. Real campaigns have conversion tracking, negative keywords and landing pages; boosted posts have likes.

3. Social media marketing

Social media marketing is building and running your presence on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and, for some businesses, X — the organic side, distinct from paid ads. It is your storefront now: almost every customer checks your Instagram before visiting, booking or buying, and a dead page quietly sends them to a competitor.

Done properly it is a system, not a mood: a monthly content calendar, reels that people actually finish, captions in the language your customers speak (Hindi-first for most of India), community management in the comments and DMs, and reporting that counts enquiries rather than likes. Creator collaborations — local food bloggers, lifestyle creators — sit inside this type and often produce the warmest reach a small brand can get.

Cost and time. Our social media plans start at ₹15,000 per month with content included. Engagement improves in the first month; meaningful follower and enquiry growth compounds over three to six months. Anyone promising ten thousand followers in a fortnight is buying bots.

Best for. Cafes, boutiques, salons, gyms, clinics, schools, D2C brands — anything visual, local or lifestyle-driven, and any business where trust is the sale.

The expensive mistake. Posting sporadically in no particular voice. Consistency beats cleverness; the calendar is the product.

4. Content marketing

Content marketing means creating genuinely useful material — guides, comparisons, calculators, case studies, explainers — that answers the questions your customers ask before they buy. It feeds SEO (the pages that rank are content), social (the posts that get saved are content) and email (the newsletters people open are content). The article you are reading is content marketing.

The hard part is not writing; it is choosing. Good content marketing starts from the buyer's real questions — "how much does a root canal cost", "WordPress or Shopify for my store" — and answers them better than anyone else on the internet. Thin, generic articles produced to "have a blog" do nothing.

Cost and time. Our content marketing plans start at ₹18,000 per month. Because content earns its traffic through search and shares, expect three to six months before it produces steady leads — then it produces them for years.

Best for. Experts and professionals (doctors, lawyers, consultants), B2B and manufacturers, education, and any considered purchase where buyers research first.

The expensive mistake. Producing content about yourself. Nobody searches for your company news; they search for their problems.

5. Email and WhatsApp marketing

Email marketing sends messages to people who have given you their address — newsletters, offers, follow-ups, reminders. In India, WhatsApp does the same job with far higher open rates, which is why we treat them as one type: owned messaging channels where you are not renting attention from an algorithm.

This is the most under-used type among small businesses, and the cheapest. Every enquiry, every customer and every visitor who left their number is an audience you already paid to acquire. A monthly WhatsApp broadcast to past customers, an automated follow-up sequence for enquiries that did not convert, a festive offer to your list — these regularly outperform a new ad campaign because the audience already knows you.

Cost and time. Mostly tool cost: email platforms are free or a few thousand rupees a month at small volumes, and WhatsApp Business is free (the official API has per-message costs at scale). Results arrive in days — the first broadcast usually produces bookings. We build WhatsApp follow-up flows into our ad campaigns and social plans because a lead answered in minutes converts many times better than one answered tomorrow.

Best for. Every business with a customer list — clinics for recalls, restaurants for offers, institutes for admissions, D2C for repeat orders, B2B for nurturing long sales cycles.

The expensive mistake. Broadcasting to people who did not opt in. Beyond the legal risk, it burns the channel: blocked numbers and spam reports kill deliverability for everyone on your list.

6. Video and YouTube marketing

Video marketing uses short and long video to explain, demonstrate and build authority — YouTube for search-driven long-form content, Reels and Shorts for discovery. YouTube is also the world's second-largest search engine, and Hindi-language video is one of the fastest-growing corners of the Indian internet, which makes it a rare channel where a small expert can reach a national audience.

Two things decide whether a channel grows: whether videos are packaged to be found (titles, thumbnails, descriptions — video SEO) and whether they hold attention once clicked (retention). Most stuck channels have good content and no system around it.

Cost and time. Our YouTube optimisation plans start at ₹15,000 per month for video SEO, thumbnails and strategy on your uploads. Click-through improves within the first optimised videos; subscriber growth compounds over three to six months. Recording costs are whatever your phone and an hour a week cost.

Best for. Doctors, educators, coaches, real estate (property walkthroughs), food, fitness, and D2C brands whose products need demonstrating.

The expensive mistake. Buying views or subscribers. Dead audiences suppress a channel harder than no audience at all.

7. Influencer and affiliate marketing

Influencer marketing pays or partners with creators to put your product in front of their audience. Affiliate marketing pays partners a commission only when they produce a sale — bloggers, comparison sites, YouTubers with tracked links. Both borrow trust that someone else has already built.

For small Indian businesses the most useful version is local: a Dwarka food blogger, a Chandigarh fashion creator, a Raipur lifestyle page with a genuinely engaged following. Micro-creators with ten to fifty thousand real followers usually outperform celebrities on cost per enquiry, and the content they produce can be reused in your ads.

Cost and time. Per campaign — from a free meal or product for a micro-creator to lakhs for a large account; affiliate programmes cost nothing until a sale happens (typically 5–20% commission). Results are fast but stop when the campaign does, which is why this type works best layered on top of SEO and social, not instead of them.

Best for. Consumer brands, restaurants, fashion, beauty, D2C products, launches and seasonal pushes.

The expensive mistake. Choosing creators by follower count. Ask for their audience demographics and engagement, and check the comments are real people.

How long each type takes to produce results

The single most common reason businesses abandon a working strategy is a mismatch between expectation and timeline. Here is what we typically see, measured in weeks from launch to the first meaningful, attributable enquiries.

Typical weeks to first attributable results, by type
  • PPC ads (Google / Meta)1 weeks
  • Email & WhatsApp2 weeks
  • Influencer & affiliate3 weeks
  • Social media marketing10 weeks
  • Video & YouTube12 weeks
  • Content marketing16 weeks
  • SEO20 weeks

Based on our client work across Delhi NCR, Chandigarh and Raipur; a strong starting position shortens these, a crowded niche lengthens them.

Read it as a portfolio, not a ranking. The fast types keep the lights on while the slow types compound — which is exactly why the next section pairs them.

What each type costs to start

Agencies love vague ranges. These are our actual starting monthly prices for the managed types, so you can plan a real budget.

Starting monthly management cost, MarketingPulse plans (2026)
  • Social media marketing₹15,000
  • Video & YouTube₹15,000
  • SEO₹18,000
  • Content marketing₹18,000
  • PPC management₹20,000

PPC ad spend is paid separately to Google or Meta. Email/WhatsApp and influencer marketing have no fixed plan — costs are tools and per-campaign fees.

Every plan is a rolling monthly engagement — there is no annual lock-in on any of them — because a quarter is enough time to see whether a type is working for you.

How the seven types work together

No type works alone. Search captures demand that social and video created; email converts the visitors search brought in; content feeds all of them. The clearest way to see it is by the stage a customer is at:

Buyer stageQuestion in their headTypes that answer it
Awareness"Who can solve this?"Social media, video & YouTube, content, influencer, Meta ads
Consideration"Why this one?"SEO (reviews, comparisons), content (case studies), email nurture, retargeting ads
Decision"How do I start?"Google Ads on buying terms, WhatsApp, landing pages, email offers

Pick one type per stage and you have a complete funnel with three types — which is the whole idea behind the 3-3-3 rule in marketing: three content types, three channels, three buyer stages, held for ninety days before you add anything.

Which types does your business actually need?

This is the table I wish someone had handed me eight years ago. Start with the primary types; add a secondary only once the first are running properly.

Business typePrimary types (start here)Secondary (add later)Skip for now
Local service (repairs, movers, home services)SEO (map pack), Google Ads, WhatsApp follow-upReviews-led content, ReelsInfluencer, affiliate

And by budget, because that is the question people actually have:

If you are unsure where you sit, send us your website — we will tell you honestly which two or three to start with, and it is free.

Five mistakes we see across all seven types

  • Starting with the seven, not the one. A business that tries all seven with a small budget does none of them well. Start with the type your customers already use, get it working, then add.
  • Measuring the wrong thing. Likes, impressions and rankings are inputs. Enquiries, cost per enquiry and revenue are outputs. Report the outputs.
  • Renting without owning. Businesses built entirely on one rented channel — one ad account, one social platform — get wiped out by a policy change. Always pair a rented type with an owned one: your website, your list, your WhatsApp.
  • Quitting the slow types early. SEO, content and video are judged at month three, not week three. The businesses that dominate a category are the ones still compounding while competitors restart.
  • Paying for reach you cannot convert. Traffic to a slow website with no WhatsApp button and no proof is wasted regardless of which type produced it. Fix the website before you scale any channel.

How to measure each type

One number per type is enough to know whether it is working. These are the ones we report to clients.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 7 types of digital marketing?

Search engine optimisation (SEO), pay-per-click advertising (PPC), social media marketing, content marketing, email and WhatsApp marketing, video and YouTube marketing, and influencer and affiliate marketing. Some lists split these differently — separating email from WhatsApp, or influencer from affiliate — but these seven cover every way a business reaches customers online.

Which type of digital marketing is most effective?

For most businesses over a two-year horizon, SEO produces the highest return because the traffic keeps coming after the work is paid for. For enquiries this month, PPC is the most effective. The honest answer is that the most effective type is the one your customers already use when they are ready to buy, paired with a second type that feeds it.

Which type of digital marketing is cheapest?

Email and WhatsApp marketing — the audience already knows you and the tools are free or nearly free at small scale. Among managed services, social media management and YouTube optimisation start lowest at around ₹15,000 per month in our plans.

Which type gives the fastest results?

Pay-per-click advertising. Google and Meta campaigns go live within days and produce enquiries in the first week, followed closely by WhatsApp broadcasts to an existing list. SEO, content and video are the slowest to start and the strongest over time.

What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO earns positions in Google's organic results and the map pack without paying for clicks. SEM (search engine marketing) usually means paid search ads — Google Ads — although some people use it to mean SEO and paid search together. Most businesses eventually run both: ads for immediate enquiries, SEO to reduce the dependence on paid clicks over time.

How many types should a small business start with?

Two or three, never seven. Pick one type that captures existing demand (usually SEO or Google Ads), one that builds trust (social media or video), and one owned channel to follow up (WhatsApp or email). Hold that shape for ninety days before adding anything — the 3-3-3 rule exists for exactly this reason.

Can I do digital marketing myself instead of hiring an agency?

Yes, especially email, WhatsApp and basic social media — and you should own your accounts either way. The types that punish inexperience are paid ads, where mistakes cost money daily, and technical SEO, where errors are invisible until rankings drop. Many businesses run the simple types in-house and hire out the technical ones.

The short version

Seven types, three jobs: capture demand (SEO, PPC), build trust (social, content, video, influencer) and follow up (email, WhatsApp). Every business needs one of each job, matched to how its customers buy and sized to its budget. Start with the two or three the tables above point to, measure one number per type, give the slow ones a quarter, and add the next type only when the first are working.

If you want that decision made for your business with real numbers, send us your website. We will tell you which types we would run, what they would cost, and — just as usefully — which ones we would skip.

Which types fit your business?

Send us your website and we will reply within one working day with the two or three types we would start with, what they cost, and what to expect by month three — no obligation.
